Time for a Little Math Quiz

Last week, Mrs. Judy, Mrs. Penny, Wendy, Bethany and I were at the prom closet. We had 2 brides and 3 special occasion ladies trying on wedding dresses to find that special dress!  It was a blessed day!  I was beyond excited because God was putting wedding dresses and a special person together!

So here is a little math quiz:
We had 12 available dresses, 2 left the prom closet.  So how many should we have left?
We were left with 15 dresses!  Confused?

As all of us at the prom closet counted the dresses we counted 15!  If I am correct if we had 12 and 2 left the prom closet we should have 10 left.  In the war room we all looked at each other and asked “How did it happen? Where do they come from?”

As I was taking pictures of the dresses for Facebook my mind wandered to an earlier conversation with one of the volunteers.  She was worried because she was finding it harder and harder to spend time with God as she was getting busier and busier in her life.

Time for a little “God math” quiz:
It is not about subtracting time for God but adding time for God.  He adds grace, love, peace, comfort, and blessings... he takes away our sins and divides His work among His servants.  Now that is God math for sure!

At the end of the night we all left more blessed than when we started.

Does God know math? Yes He does!

God works for the good of those who love him

Did you ever imagine that the Prom Closet would take a turn from prom dresses to wedding dresses?  Did you ever think we would end up with 12 wedding dresses hiding in our War Room?  Have you ever thought you knew what was going to happen and you were completely wrong?

Without knowing God’s purpose, last week I put a post on Facebook looking for brides in need and several of them responded.   I went to the Prom Closet to find the 5 or 6 wedding dresses I thought we had.  The more I looked, the more I found.

I stood there staring at the 12 wedding gowns and thought “How did they all got here? We do prom dresses NOT wedding dresses?”  In my mind, I needed to remind God what we do (I will never learn.)

As brides started to reach out, one in particular was able to meet last Friday.  Again, not knowing what God purpose was,  I pulled the wedding dresses out for her.

She looked at them and said " We are having a very small wedding with just a couple of people.  Those dresses are beautiful but they might be too much.”

I took her to our prom dresses with the possibility of finding a prom dress that could be turned into a wedding gown.  She started to pull several dresses of different colors. My thought was wedding dresses but God had something else in mind.   I had failed to ask our first question “What style do you like?”

In desperation, she said " I don't have anything to wear and we are getting married next weekend."
I remembered what Tammy always says and assured her "God brought you to us.  That means the dress is somewhere in here."

She started trying dress after dress then I noticed that the dresses she was pulling were navy blue.  Yet again I failed to ask our second most important question “What color do you like?” I started pulling navy dresses from the War Room with no avail and then I did something odd - I started bringing different color dresses.

Yet again in my mind "She is a bride.  She needs a bridal gown."

God was just not understanding that! So, I brought her the only short bridal gown we had and she loved it.  It was a little big so I asked her if she knew anyone who could alter it. Sadly, she said " My grandmother could sew but she passed away a couple of months ago.  It has been a hard year but I told God that September was my month.  You have no idea how much of a blessing this is for me.  My friends keep asking me if I have anything to wear."

Again, I assured her " We have the dress in here for your special day."

After several hours of looking and trying, I brought her a flowing, soft grey dress. she tried it on and it was perfect! As soon as she looked at herself in the mirror her face lit up.  I knew we had found her dress!

She turned to me and said "I love it!  This is my dress! My husband will be wearing a blue suit and I was hoping I will find something that matched with his and this is it!"

God was not done showing me His purpose.

As I was putting her dress in a bag along with shoes and jewelry I thought I should find a Bible for her.   I went to the War Room but couldn’t find one.  Sadly, I went back to packing her items when my eyes fell on a basket full of bags.   I took the bags out and to my surprise there was one Bible in there! A blue Bible that to match her husband's suit!

She took the Bible and said " I don't know what to say, I just happened to see your post and now here I am being blessed like this! You have no idea how I feel!"

I looked at the sweet girl and said "We think we know what we need but then God shows us in the middle of our storms how He is holding us.  He blesses us beyond what we think we need."

She said " I have to tell everyone in my church what God has done. I am part of the worship team so I can tell them what a blessing this is for me.  You have taken your time to be here with me and bless me."

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

Now let’s go out and tell everyone that the Lord is good!

Christmas in July

Monday I got a phone call from FiFi's:

“We have a few prom dresses for you…  (pause) ... around 60." 

What?! I know I should be used to it by now but it feels like Christmas morning every time! God continues to surprise us here at the Prom Closet!

Chris and I picked up the dresses and when we brought them back to the church, we were determined to get them all in one trip.  I am glad no one was around to video us struggling to carry all those dresses, walking like ducks up to the Closet, and dropping them all along the way.

Thursday, I got a phone call from Hope House about someone who needed a dress.   As the director asked me about how the last prom season went, I told her about all the great things that had happened:  the many walk ins we had, the children's hospital, the fashion shows for the elderly and …

I knew her wheels were turning because she interrupted me by saying "Fashion show? I wish we could do that for our women at Hope House!”

(I might of have said something like "That would be a great idea! We have all the dresses they need")… OK… I did say that…

We started brain storming (and I might have said to "call me back if you want to do it")... OK… I did say that too.

She said “Yes I am going to call you for sure.  When is your down time for the season?”

My first thought was that we would want to do this all during the season.  Kind of like Chris and I trying to carry all the dresses in one trip.  It dawned on me then that God was saying “the load is too much.”  Trying to carry the load all at one time we might drop something.  We might miss the best parts!


I love how God is using this ministry to reach people during every season and from all walks of life.  The best part is He allows us to see that!

Surprise!

The other day I stopped by the Prom Closet to drop off some donations and stood in the doorway of the “war room” for a little “me moment.”

“How are we going to get all this done?  How many more dresses can we take?” I thought.  Staring at the piles of dresses, standing with my hands on my hips, shaking my head and wondering how we were going to do it, Christian snapped me out of it.

“Mama, I think God has many girls in mind for next year,” he said.  I turned to see his arms full of dresses and I realized that each one of them represents smiles, beauty, and tears for the girl that God has already picked out.

As usual, God put me back on track pretty quick.  All I saw was a mess and endless work.  God sees a chance to share his unending love, grace, beauty, and eternal life.

If only you could see the faces...

This is what you look like when you see God.  For people who say "What God?" I've never seen him.  Have you?"

We can without a doubt say "Yes we have!"


Friday morning we were blessed to host the Hopewell Special Needs Prom.  Dozens of young prom goers arrived to have their picture taken, grab some refreshments (thanks McDonalds for the generous gift of hundreds of McNuggets!) and dance the morning away in true style.

For us, this event symbolized the culmination of a season full of God sightings, tearful stories, and witnesses to the generosity and compassion of God's people.


So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  Genesis 1:27

I wish we could show you their faces.  In the smiles, the laughter, and the pure joy, you see God.  Not a God who demands from us but a God who gives to us unending love and joy.

Love demonstrated in simple things.  Joy that comes from truly feeling special.












Thank you to all the volunteers who made this Prom season so special!  Thank you to all the organizations who helped make it all possible.  Thank you God for revealing yourself to us.

I am glad God never takes a break. Otherwise I would be a mess!

Friday morning my mom, Mr. Kay, and I went to pick up just a few prom dresses from Lincoln Ministries for next year.  When we got back to church with our van literally crammed with dresses, there was a lady and two daughters waiting for us.

Huffing and puffing with our allergies working over time, we ran up and down the stairs unloading the dresses and helping our newest customers find their princess dresses.   Then the mom said “what a blessing this place is” and it stopped me in my tracks.

I know I have heard that before but what makes today different?  You see we are all dealing with times in life that leaves us tired and out of breath.  But God breathes life into us.

"Let all that you do be done in love" 1 Corinthians 16:14


As I talked to the lady I found she has 16 kids!  Well, not literally.  Her kids are grown but she has taken these kids on as her project - to do things for them as she can.  Talk about exhausting!

What does a Cashier and a Teacher Have in Common?

Last year one of the teachers for the special needs kids at Mallard Creek came in to the Prom Closet to help her students find dresses for their prom.  She said she was getting married soon but didn’t have a dress.  Ms. Cindy talked her into looking and she found one! 

Fast forward one year later and when I called Mallard Creek the same teacher said “I have a great story to tell you but you are going to have to wait until I get there!”  I am not very patient so the suspense was killing me.  When she came in last Friday she told me that God had put a wonderful man in her life and her wedding dress from the Closet made her feel so special on her wedding day!

A couple of weeks ago, Ms. Kay beamed as she told me the story of when she bought Bibles at the Dollar Store.  While she was checking out, the cashier asked her why she was buying so many Bibles.   Ms. Kay told her about the Prom Closet and sure enough, that cashier came in with her daughter to pick out a prom dress.  She even brought in some to donate, too.
“A lady at the store buying Bibles told me about the Prom Closet,” she said.  “What a great ministry you guys are doing!”

Now at first you wouldn’t think that a cashier and a special needs teacher would have much in common.   One was helping students and one was helping her daughter.  One was getting married and one was experiencing the joy of watching her daughter proudly go to prom.

What they both had in common was that they experienced beauty that only God can give.  God knows and provides for our needs.  God makes us feel beautiful, special, and needed in so many ways. 

She is more precious than Rubies.  Proverbs 31:10

Their hugs, thanks, and stories warmed our hearts too and reminded us that God is at work every day.

Sweet, Juicy Fruit of the Spirit

Last week we had a young lady that came in for the Joy Prom that bonded with Tammy.  She helped them find the perfect dress and as they thanked Tammy I heard her say “It wasn’t me – it was God.”

At the same time I was helping another family and it was taking awhile so I offered the mom some fruit from our breakfast.  She replied “Yes please!  I haven’t had any breakfast.”

As I was making her a plate of fruit I realized that her experience here was more than just a plate of fruit, she was getting ready to taste the fruit of God’s work as well.  When I handed her the snack, she said that there was no way she could do this for her daughters.  I explained to her that this ministry was the result of God’s goodness and provision.

"A generous person will be blessed for he shares his food with the poor." Proverbs22:9

See the plate of fruit is not important. Tammy was able to share "food with the poor" when she said "it wasn't me it was God." I was able to do the same. Both families were able to taste that the Lord is good. Best of all, at the prom closet we get to share our food with the poor. Not physical food but spiritual food.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good" Psalm34:8a

I am confident that many families have been able to taste the sweet, juicy fruit of the Spirit here at the Prom Closet.  In fact, this season 357 dresses have found their person.   Just like fruit that is sweet and juicy to our taste, the fruit of the smiles and joy that God uses our ministry for leaves me craving more!

It's Just a Number on a Dress

We give Bibles wrapped in recycled prom dresses to the young ladies (and young men) who come into the Prom Closet.  As many of you know we gave away every single Bible we had. Last week, I sent out a Facebook message about needing Bibles to give to our Bible lady.

I have been praying and thinking about what we could do to find more Bibles and then Saturday guess who shows up?  Bible lady!!! Volunteer Kelley said something that stuck in my mind “Ask and you shall receive." How true! God is never late or early. His timing is always perfect!

One of our customers was at the mall and stopped at the kiosk to ask if Belk had any formal dresses on sale.  The attendant told her that she knows of a place that gives away Prom dresses and if she was in need she should check it out.

When she arrived, she explained that at first she wasn’t going to come because she didn’t know what to expect.   She said that by faith she came and was pleasantly surprised at how nice everyone was to her and her daughter.

Her daughter tried on several dresses and was beginning to get discouraged.  I noticed her staring at the size tags and getting more and more sad.  As they found the perfect dresses and were ready to check out, the number on the tag came up in our conversation and I knew that God giving us a golden opportunity.

I told her the number on that tag is not who you are.  It doesn't say anything about you.  That tag is just a number on a dress. Who you are comes from God. You were made in his image and He knows how precious you are.  He knows your name. 

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;" Jeremiah 1:5a

This season 137 dresses have found their person since we opened for the season and 46 dresses were given out this past Saturday alone!

Remember we are not that number.  That number doesn't say who we are. That number just tells us how many seeds God has to help grow. Our job is to plant.  His job is to give them life.

By the Hundreds

Matthew 13:8 (NIV) Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
We are very close to our 100 dresses given mark.  That is 100 dresses given away, 100 seeds planted.  Pray that the soil is good and God gets the glory!

Last weekend we picked up 300 dresses from Girl Talk in Charlotte.  What a wonderful group they have and what a blessing to us just in time for Prom season!

We are also partnering with Joy Prom for kids with special needs.  We will be dressing the beautiful young girls and handsome young men.

I Will Never Look at a Power Outlet the Same Way Again

I must confess that last Saturday I was worn out.  After fitting dresses for so many girls I was hungry, tired, and ready to go home.  Worse yet, we still had a planning meeting to do!
At closing time the worst case scenario happened - a family came in to find a dress.  I must admit that I lost my cool at that point.   How would we start our meeting on time?  I need food!
I stepped into a side room to cool down when my eyes locked on a lowly power outlet.  God spoke to me through that power outlet at that very moment.  As I stared at the power outlet it became very clear to me who truly has the power.  I see now that God gave us a task to do but he didn’t give us the power over it.  The Prom Closet is under his power and belongs to him.
As I walked out of the room I saw power outlets everywhere!  Where are they when I need them?
It was at that moment that the last girl walked out of the fitting room in her new pink Princess dress and her mom exclaimed “You look like a princess!”
You should have seen the look on that young girl’s face.  I don’t know if it was the first time she had ever heard those words but it sure did seem like it.
As she admired herself in the mirror with the biggest grin plastered across her face I was reminded of who truly has the power.  I was reminded then and there that He changes lives every day through our works and we are just blessed to be able to see it.

It is more than a dress.  God made that little girl feel very special that day.  And worse, I almost missed it...

Off To a Great Start

This the first week that Prom Closet is open for the 2017 season and we are off to a great start!

This first week we have given away 51 dresses!   We were so busy Saturday that we had to scramble to make dressing room space.

Teen volunteer Olivia said she had a great time.  "People don't mind that I pick dresses and shoes for them.  They let me dress them!"



The Prom Closet saw a busy first day of the 2017 season.

God has great things in store for Prom Closet this year.  Praise Him!

God is not slowing down,   He is showing us how wide, long, high, and deep is his love.
From starting a prom closet with six dresses to planing a Special Needs Prom with no budget, I have learned that when God gives us a task he doesn't check our bank account -  He is checking our faith. Now that is deep and wide!!
We have been contacted to help with a national pageant for people with disabilities to be held in Charlotte called the USA Ms. Heels for Wheels.   I hope to give more info as the talks continue.
Dress pick up!!!!  We are going to be picking a large donation of prom dresses at Imaginon which could lead to a donation of over 500 dresses!
Hope Haven has reached out to us to help them again and they believe that this might be the last year that they host a prom for their residents. Please be in prayer for them as they make a transition.
Ephesians 3:18- (NIV)18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

A Special Day for Some Very Special Kids

For weeks before this day, we had worked to make all the dresses look brand new.  We could all feel the excitement building as the day approached.  What did God have in store for us? 

We all felt those nervous jitters that come when you know you are about to see the Kingdom of God in all its glory.

As the bus pulled up our hearts filled with joy as each one of our special customers stepped onto our parking lot and made their way to our door.  This was not just any day at the Prom Loft in at First Baptist Church in Huntersville.  This was the day we were fitting dresses for the first very special prom for some of the students of a local high school.

“I hope there is a dress for me!” shouted a giant of a young lady.  At 6 foot 3 and size 28, we all knew that sizing this customer would truly be a God-sized task.

“God has sent you to us so there is a dress in here” I confidently replied.  Although deep inside I wasn’t so sure.  I looked over at Aileen, the founder of the Prom Loft, and when I saw her face I knew I wasn’t alone.

The volunteers went to work fitting the students as Aileen and I set out to find just the right dress for our new friend.

We tried dress after dress but nothing seemed to work.  In our staging area was a stack of dresses that we had not had a chance to put out yet.  A volunteer was going through the stack checking sizes and making suggestions.  One after the other nothing worked. 

All through this our new friend never lost her smile, or her faith.  It was her attitude that kept us going.

Finally the stack was down to the very last dress.  Could it be?  Yes it was a size that just might work.
Eagerly she took the last dress into our fitting room and no more than a minute later, a squeal of delight filled the room.

“It fits.  It fits!” she shouted.

That was all it took.  The water works came on as everyone in the Loft was filled joy and praise.  Truly that is what the Kingdom of God looks like!  She received her special dress for her special prom and we received our special blessing as we witnessed God at work.  What a great day!

Students leave the Prom Loft ready for their special prom.


Lydia’s Prom Loft was founded by Aileen, a dedicated volunteer at the local crisis assistance center Lydia’s Loft.  Formal gowns and suits were coming in to the center and there really wasn’t a need for them.  People came to the center because they needed essentials, not formal wear.

She started keeping the dresses in her garage with the thought that someday they would be needed. One day Aileen surprised me with a vision she had for the six dresses she had saved. 

“I wonder if there are young ladies who can’t afford prom dresses that may like to have these for their formals?” she asked.

Once word got out, those first six dresses did not last long as young ladies went home with their new treasures.  Just like loaves and fishes, those six dresses seemed to multiply.  One by one, more kids came and just when we thought there would not be enough dresses, more were provided from sources all over the Charlotte area.  By the end of that first season we had almost 100 dresses left over!

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Out of the blue, Aileen got a call from a group that was planning to hold a prom at the Levine’s Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.  We decided to box up all the dresses left and donate them all to this event.  As the last of dresses were loaded into the SUV we were both happy and sad.  We knew the dresses were meant to go to them but we wondered too if this was the end of the Prom Loft.

God was not finished.

It wasn’t any time before Aileen got a call from the Junior League in Charlotte.  They had lots of formal dresses and shoes left over, too.  Would we be able to use any of them?

Another call from Girl Talk and we were back in business with seven times more dresses than we had the first season! 

In Luke 12:31 Jesus says “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.

The Prom Loft is in its seventh season and the blessings just keep flowing.  Every year we keep a record of the number of dresses we have and each year they double.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come to help in this special ministry each year.

Countless girls and boys have felt the dignity and joy of letting their beauty shine. 

Word continues to spread and the Kingdom continues to grow right before our eyes...
